Charles Evans is the Head of Gastrointestinal Surgery at the University Hospitals of Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust. As an experienced consultant colorectal and general surgeon, he is a national leader and international trainer in robotic surgery, specialising in the treatment of cancer and non-cancerous bowel conditions plus abdominal wall and groin hernias.

Surgical training
Charles undertook basic surgical training in London and was awarded an MD from the University of London following research into colorectal cancer and minimally invasive surgery.
He undertook higher surgical training at the Oxford surgical deanery, following which he was selected for the National Ethicon Fellowship in Advanced Colorectal Surgery. He completed his training with a further fellowship in complex colorectal surgery at St Mark's Hospital, London.

Consultant career
Charles was appointed as a consultant colorectal and general surgeon at the University Hospitals of Coventry and Warwickshire (UHCW) NHS Trust in 2014. He began his robotic colorectal practice within three months of starting this post, and has been undertaking regular robotic operating ever since.
After roles as the colorectal cancer team lead and clinical lead for colorectal surgery, he was appointed Head of Gastrointestinal Surgery at UHCW in 2020. Of this, Charles says: “Working to ensure we were able to continue delivering cancer surgery throughout the COVID pandemic is one of my proudest achievements as the Head of GI services.”
In recognition of his robotic surgical skills and excellent clinical outcomes, Charles was appointed a surgical trainer (proctor) for robotic colorectal surgery by Intuitive Surgical in 2019. He has gone on to train surgeons across the U.K, Europe and South Africa.
Charles sits on the ACPGBI robotic colorectal surgical committee and is actively involved in the development of national training and fellowship programmes.
Private practice
Charles has been performing private practice in the West Midlands since 2017, working out of Nuffield Health Warwickshire Hospital. Since 2021, Charles has been working with his practice partner Danilo Miskovic, performing robotic colorectal surgery privately in London at The Wellington Hospital, part of HCA Healthcare UK.
